Podcast #272 – Unpacking the Challenges of Data Sovereignty with Patrick Smith

In this episode, Chris Evans chats to EMEA Field CTO at Pure Storage, Patrick Smith, on the issues of data sovereignty. For many reasons, including geopolitical problems, public cloud usage, the rise of AI and regulation, businesses need to focus on how data is managed and controlled within the IT organisation. Data is valuable asset, but regulations such as the DORA Act put responsibilities on companies to ensure systems run in a resilient manner that is in turn affected by the ability to apply sovereign control over that data.

Pure Storage commissioned a research report in conjunction with the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia. The report highlights the risks and challenges companies perceive in ensuring that data remains under the sovereign control of the business, while continuing to remain competitive through the use of platforms such as the public cloud.

Patrick explains the results of the survey, which can be downloaded – here (registration required).

As the IT world becomes more complex, we expect sovereignty issues to increase, especially with the diversity of platforms and solutions in the market today. As a result, IT organisations need to establish a strategy to answer sovereignty challenges, government regulation and ensuring business reputation remains intact.
